Psalms 123:1
“Unto thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens.”
What does it mean unto thee lift I up mine eyes? I know that it might seem obvious but sometimes the most obvious things are those that we miss. First let’s look at the word “unto.” The prefix un means to do the opposite or reverse and the word “to” indicates direction. When you put them together it signifies to change direction. To look away from what you where looking at before and look to Christ.
The Psalmist goes on to say “behold as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the Lord our God until that he have mercy upon us.” A servant is totally dependent upon that which his master can give. He knows that his master knows he is a servant and unable to supply for himself. Our Father knows that we are unable to do anything without him that why he had mercy upon us.
When we look away from the hand of man and lift up our eyes to Christ we find his eyes are always looking back at us with mercy and loving-kindness. We have a promise that surely goodness and mercy will follow us all the days of our lives. (Psalms 23:6)
